Business rates and council tax
The cost of business rates can be substantial and their administration complex. Ratepayers often need professional advice on establishing their liability and understanding how assessments may be challenged.
RICS members and firms provide advice in respect of business rates (also known as Non-Domestic Rating (NDR) or rating). This advice may be around billing, the rating assessment, rateable value, appeal process and other relevant matters such as available reliefs.
All RICS members providing Non-Domestic Rating (NDR) advice must do so in accordance with the Rating consultancy code of practice.
We urge ratepayers to only take business rates advice from a member of a professional body such as RICS.
Some RICS members may also provide advice around council tax on change in bands, deletion from the council tax list and where it should perhaps be valued for Non-Domestic Rates purposes.
