‘How to Rent’ – Advice on renting a property for tenants

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

Housing Minister Kris Hopkins launches new 'How to rent' guide for private rented sector tenants.

RICS welcomes the launch of the new Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) ‘How to rent’ guide. This guide is for tenants in the private rented sector to help them understand their rights and responsibilities. It provides a checklist and more detailed information on each stage of the process, including:

  • things to consider before renting
  • living in a rented home
  • what happens at the end of a tenancy
  • what to do if things go wrong

RICS worked with DCLG in developing the guide and we are pleased to see that it encourages consumers to check that the landlord or letting agent is accredited through a professional body like ARLA, NALS, RICS or UKALA.

The guide links back through to RICS Find A Surveyor, an online directory of surveyors which helps users find professionally qualified surveyors across the UK. This is another step forward in driving up professional standards in the private rented sector for the benefits of consumers and the industry.
